Starhill Golf & Country Club

Starhill Golf & Country Club is a 36-hole club at Kempas Lama, near Skudai on the western side of Johor Bahru. Both of its par-72 championship courses, the Bintang and the Bukit, opened in 1993, and both carry a slope of 139, which marks Starhill as one of the more demanding golf venues in the Johor Bahru area.

The Bintang Course measures about 6,834 yards from the back tees, with a course rating of 73.8. It mixes tree-lined and open parkland over undulating terrain, with large greens, generous bunkering and water hazards to navigate, and black, blue, white and red tees let players decide how much of the course to take on. It is the Starhill course on which walking is permitted.

The Bukit Course lives up to its name, bukit being the Malay word for hill. It is the hillier of the two, with pronounced elevation changes, and measures about 6,859 yards from the blue tees with a course rating of 73.5. Large greens with steep run-offs and plenty of bunkering put a premium on approach play, while the white (about 6,218 yards) and red (about 5,477 yards) tees give shorter hitters a fairer route. Golf carts are compulsory on the Bukit, and recent golfer reviews note that it has been renovated.

Both courses have Zoysia matrella fairways and Tifdwarf Bermuda greens. Caddies are available, and the club has a driving range, golf academy, rental clubs and a clubhouse with a restaurant, bar, snacks and locker rooms.

Starhill is owned by a Japanese company and has long been popular with Japanese golfers, including expatriates who cross over from Singapore.
