About Kuma Country Club
Kuma Country Club is a 27-hole facility in Nishiki town, built from three nines named Higo, Satsuma, and Hyuga that combine into full 18-hole rounds under the names Higo/Hyuga, Satsuma/Higo, and Satsuma/Hyuga. The original nine dates back to a 1973 design by Shoichi Suzuki, with the club expanded to its full 27-hole layout in 1988 through additional work by Hisato Ebihara, giving the facility a genuine sense of golf architecture history spanning more than a decade of development. Yardages across the three combinations range from roughly 6,834 to 7,033 yards from the back tees, with slope ratings between 133 and 136, making Kuma one of the more demanding 27-hole complexes in southern Kumamoto. The club operates year-round as a semi-private facility and offers golf carts, caddie service, a putting green, restaurant, and locker rooms, with major credit cards accepted and walking permitted for those who prefer it. Nishiki town sits in the Kuma river valley in the southern part of the prefecture, an area also known for its whisky distilleries and river-rafting tourism, giving visiting golfers plenty to do beyond the course itself. The elevated slope ratings across all three nine-hole combinations mean Kuma rewards accurate ball-striking more than most resort-style courses in the region.
