About Penang Turf Club Golf Section
The Penang Turf Club Golf Section is one of the most unusual golf courses in Malaysia: a 9-hole, par-33 course laid out within the grounds of the Penang Turf Club racecourse in George Town, with some holes constructed inside the racing track itself.
The course was established in 1948 under the supervision of Tom Verity, a former professional at the Royal Selangor Golf Club. It once had 18 holes, but the top nine has been closed since December 2014, and today golfers play the lower nine. From the men's tees it measures 2,409 metres, with a course rating of 32.4 and slope of 117; the ladies' tees play 2,130 metres. Fairways and rough are cow grass and the greens are Serangoon grass, giving it a classic old-school Malaysian feel.
Many visitors play the nine twice for an 18-hole round. Caddies are mandatory, and pull carts and rental clubs are available. There is also a driving range, a golf simulator and indoor practice facilities. Opening hours are adjusted around race days and maintenance, so it is worth checking before you go.
Being right in George Town, the Turf Club is one of the easiest places on the island for a quick round. On CoGolfers, you can join golf games at the Penang Turf Club or host golf games and invite the CoGolfers community to fill the group. Meet golfers in George Town, find golf partners for an after-work nine, and connect with golfers near you who enjoy heritage golf with a difference.
